Kathy Whitworth Classic: held June 10-12 at Trophy Club.

Laid back, humorous, and approachable, Kathy Whitworth was a very real presence at her namesake tournament.  After the tournament, I went back to Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book to see what he had to say about Kathy. A few excerpts:
“Kathy Whitworth is one of the sweetest and most thoughtful people I ever knew…She makes more long putts when she needs them than any other player I ever saw.”  And this: "A few years ago Micky [Wright] and Kathy teamed up against the men in the Legends of Golf Senior Tournament in Austin and were very popular with the galleries, but the men pros didn’t like the competition and they weren’t invited back."

Back to the tournament: the food was delicious, there were prizes and gifts galore, and of course the fellowship of 139 other avid women golfers who love the game. It just doesn’t get any better than this and I would encourage all of you ladies to add the Kathy Whitworth Classic to your calendars next year.

Who's Kathy Whitworth? Hall of Famer Kathy Whitworth has 88 career wins, an all-time record for both men's and women's U.S. Tours. She was the LPGA Player of the Year seven times and has won six majors. Ms. Whitworth captured the New Mexico State Amateur two consecutive years (1957, 1958) before turning professional in December 1958.
